Gabriel and the Swallows by Esther Dalseno
Review of Gabriel and the Swallows (The Volatile Duology) by Esther Dalseno
DESCRIPTION:
A lonely farm boy.
A girl with swallow’s wings.
An ancient city buried in a volcano.
A mystery old as blood and bone.
There is more to Gabriel than the life he’s ashamed of – the son of peasant winemakers, bullied relentlessly on account of his disabled mother. For Gabriel has a secret: the elaborate dream world he descends into at night – a grandiose, vivid existence – is becoming more real than his waking life.
Everything changes for Gabriel when he rescues a wounded creature – a miraculous girl with swallow’s wings – from the voracious pursuit of Alfio Gallo, a dangerous old enemy. Aided by the beautiful and mysterious Orlando Khan, Gabriel is conflicted by unanswered questions: who is the Dark One that dwells in the medieval tunnels beneath their city? Is he just a figment of Gabriel’s powerful imagination? And is the foundling really who she says she is?
Wrestling with manhood whilst beckoned by ancient rites and foreign lands, Gabriel is about to make a deadly decision that changes the course of life as he knows it…as long as he can decide which reality he’s in.
MY REVIEW:
Follow Gabriel from boyhood into manhood. As a young boy he is teased, bullied, and judged because of his mother’s disabilities. Things start to change when he finds Volatile. Who or what is Volatile? Is she a human? A bird? Or is she something else entirely? Gabriel has questions and he seeks to find those answers.
As Gabriel transitions into manhood things start to change, even get a little strange. He will face sorrows, find love, face decisions that could change his world entirely.
The descriptive writing in this book is poetic! It flows across the pages like a melodic song. This book was original and unlike any other I have ever read. It is a reading experience that will awaken all your senses! A modern day fable of sorts. It was original, and creative! As I read everything around me seemed to disappear. Time just slipped by. I was entirely enveloped into the setting of this book. Italy was brought to life so beautifully. Everything felt so real and I was transported from my living room to the small town of Orvieto. The characters were fleshed out so perfectly. Each one was their own person, and each character brought something spectacular to this story. There is a small element of magic in this book, as well as something a little dark and sinister. This is one of those rare gems in a pile of rocks that shouldn’t be missed. Get ready for a reading experience that will entice all your senses. I can’t wait to read more about all these characters. I fell in love with all of them. I am ready for the next book. Bring on more Gabriel & Volatile!
