Synopsis
When Hadley’s parents leave on a cruise and then are reported lost at sea, her perfect world is turned upside down. In a flash, she is whisked away to a new life of drudgery at Grimm House where she waits on not one but two persnickety old aunts. As she grudgingly fulfills their commands of cooking, cleaning, and even after-dinner-dancing, she comes to suspect the aunts are really witches who are scheming to take the thing she loves best. With only her wits and the help of some unlikely new friends, Hadley makes a plan to escape Grimm House and find her way home before it’s too late.
Review
This book was a short, quick, and easy middle grade story. It was enjoyable story to read. I think fans of Alice & Wonderland, Hans & Gretel, or Wizard of Oz would enjoy reading this book. At certain points in this book it made me think of those stories. This book could easily become one of those classic fairy tale stories that you read to your children and they pass on to their children. It also had a cute little life lesson story to it.
. Hadley is a character middle graders will easily be able to connect with. She’s smart and determined. She knows what she loves to do at such a young age.
The aunts are wicked little things, They belittle Hadley and treat here like a pest. For women who are supposed to be her aunts, they sure don’t treat her like it. Instead they treat her like their own personal servant. Uncaring and cold.
One day when Hadley is forced to clean the basement she hears a voice talking to her and thinks she is going crazy. Finally the voice shows itself. This is where we meet another interesting character named Gigi that becomes Hadley’s friend and helps her with escaping.
The writing flowed very easily. It had very little dialogue throughout the story but it wasn’t even missed. I don’t usually enjoy reading a book with little conversation going on between the characters. It usually gets a little boring. This was not the case at all with this book. The story was told so well it didn’t even need it. I sped through this story quickly. It is easily a story you could read in one sitting.
Can we talk about the cover work?
Absolutely gorgeous! Also the feel of the matte cover. This book was just made so well. This is definitely one of those books you want to have a copy of. It looks beautiful on the shelves and it’s one you will want to pass on to all the younger readers in your life. I am going to pass this book on to my teenage daughter to read. It’s one of those cute fun reads that you want to share with others and not keep all to yourself.
If you are looking for a story that’s original but also relatable to a young reader you should pick this one up.
